Abstract

Off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems require sophisticated power conversion technologies to maximize energy extraction, efficiently manage storage, and deliver stable power to variable loads. This literature review examines smart power conversion strategies for off-grid solar installations, focusing on maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms, DC-DC converter topologies, bidirectional energy management, and energy storage integration. The review presents a comprehensive analysis of current state-of-the-art techniques, comparing conventional methods (perturb and observe, incremental conductance) with adaptive and intelligent approaches (harmony search optimization, deep learning-based MPPT). Key findings reveal that advanced MPPT techniques improve system efficiency by 8-15% compared to conventional methods, while intelligent DC-DC converter designs enable flexible voltage ranges and reduced conversion losses. Bidirectional power converters facilitate seamless energy flow between solar arrays, batteries, and loads, essential for off-grid stability. This review identifies critical gaps in experimental validation, particularly regarding real-world field testing under varying environmental conditions and comparative performance analysis against baseline methods. Additionally, the integration of energy storage systems with intelligent power management controllers significantly enhances system reliability and load matching. The paper synthesizes recent developments in adaptive control strategies, soft-switching techniques, and IoT-based monitoring systems, providing insights into future research directions for improving off-grid solar system performance and economic viability in remote and rural applications.
