Step Bot: A Socially Assistive Stair-Climbing Robot for Everyday Needs

The robot designed is an advanced android controlled robot system which can move effective on stairs, steps and uneven surfaces on which the normal wheeled robot cannot move effectively. The primary goal of this project is to design a robot capable of easily traversing complex terrain and utilize mechanical design, embedded system, wireless communication and mobile technology to accomplish this. In real life situations, where stairs, obstacles and unpredictable terrain present in the home or work place, this type of robot would be very herself. Easy-to-use and intuitive, all the robot control is carried out using an Android application. The application will enable the user to control the robot with gestures and/or simple movements. The robot is able to move in 4 different directions: forward (up), backward (down), left and right. The commands are wirelessly sent to the robot via Bluetooth/ Wi-Fi so that the robot can react to the command immediately and be flexible to operate. This reduces the use of physical controllers, and makes it possible to control it from a distance. The use of this climbing robot in the field where people can be excluded and are unable to be safe has great significance in the rescue and disaster relief fields. In an earthquake, fire or industrial disaster scenario, the robot would be capable of going up stairs and to the areas of interest to drop supplies, determine damage or assist in earthquake or fire rescue Additionally, the robot can be utilized for service and surveillance in public buildings, offices and hospitals. The concept of Stair Climbing Robot (SCR) and its Android Controlled Robot (ACR) is introduced to students using Wireless Communication, Wheel-Leg Mechanism, Embedded Systems, Robotics, Mobile Application, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Control and Microcontroller based Motor Driver, Rescue Operations, Industrial Automation, Service Robotics, Human–Robot Interaction, Intelligent Robotic System.
